BOOK ONE: PARTY TIME – RHYTHM STYLE PIANO

Book1

The first book is an introduction to both the program and the keyboard. It begins by stating the primary principle of Pianoforall – that it’s important to lay a foundation of chords and rhythms before building improv, melody composition, and sight-reading skills beyond that.

It introduces you to the notes on the keyboard and then jumps immediately into playing some basic three-note chords .Book One also introduces musical notation, including rests and basic rhythm.

All in all, you’ll learn ten rhythms and eleven basic chords in Book One.The chords are taught with the assumption that you will be reading chord symbols in songbooks as guitar players do. Therefore, it shows you what to play when you encounter seventh chord or slash chord symbols.

By the end of the book, you should be able to play great rhythm style piano straight away with piano chords, 10 classic party rhythms, a terrific piano chord ballad, lots of keyboard diagrams, tricks, bluffs, formulas and loads of progressions in the style of classic songs, Within days you will be the life and soul of the party.

BOOK TWO: BLUES & ROCK N ROLL

Book2-271x300

Book Two builds on your knowledge by teaching you blues rhythms to use with the chords you already know.

The first concept that it emphasizes is that you should practice left hand rhythms much more than the right hand, until you can play them in your sleep. This book is brief compared to the first one, but it still teachers five blues rhythms and how to play a twelve-bar blues in any key.

By end of this book, you can now play some great Blues and Rock 'n' Roll Piano. Instantly recognisable rhythms that can be used for hundreds of classic songs. Amaze your friends with the sounds of Fat's Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, and a host of others. It's easy when you know how!

BOOK THREE: CHORD MAGIC

Book3-271x300

Book Three is heavy. It teaches you the chords of every single key, including their inversions. Thankfully, it also provides you with an “all chords memory trick” that makes the info dump easier to handle, in addition to many practice progressions to get the hang of the new material.

You’ll also encounter the “cycle of fifths” (commonly called the “circle of fifths”), a concept meant to encourage you to practice all of the keys, teach you the relationship between them, and help you understand the general structure of music.

Here you also learn more piano chords using amazing memory tricks and play some great practise progressions in the style of popular songs. Learn to change chords at speed using inversions. A special piano chord chart and some speed learning exercises will help you master your chords in next to no time!

BOOK FOUR: ADVANCED CHORDS MADE EASY

Book4-271x300

This book continues to teach you how to play chords from chord symbols found in songbooks, starting with a “magic formula” for bluffing a few more advanced chords.

A Barry Manilow-inspired piece called “Manilow Mood” will have you learning new musical devices before you attempt to write a Manilow-style composition of your own.

By the end of this book you will be ready to learn some advanced chords but Pianoforall helps you do it the easy way - not the technical way. Tons of extra practice progressions in the style of popular piano songs and a rhythm chart  for 80 Beatles songs plus some great Beatles Piano stylings.

BOOK FIVE: BALLAD STYLE

Book5-271x300

Book Five approaches ballad-style playing by introducing a step-by-step method for creating your own ballad-style songs. The process encourages experimentation with left-hand chord patterns and the forgiving pentatonic scale. This book is all about learning how to improvise, giving ideas for the melody, left-hand pattern, and chord progressions.

Included in this book is the sheet music for quite a few beautiful ballads, which you’ll likely enjoy playing.

By the end of the book you will be playing some terrific songs. This is not bland "easy" piano - you will sound like you have been playing for years.

BOOK SIX: ALL THAT JAZZ & BLUES

Book6-271x300

It starts by teaching you how to get a “bluesy” sound using the blues scale, blues chords, and other tricks, before moving on to jazz.Rather than learn to read complex jazz rhythms, you’re encouraged to learn the rhythms by listening to and copying the audio clips.

Book Six walks you through jazz in four distinct keys, gives you lots of tips and tricks for jazz improvisation, and serves up many cool practice progressions. You’ll learn all about quartal harmony before finishing up with a comprehensive lesson in seventh chords.

Also, there are amazingly easy techniques which you can apply to any tune-Standards,Traditional, Jazz piano, Modern Jazz improvisation, flashy "runs", cool riffs, chords, patterns, blues scales, you name it- it's all here - Jazz Piano made easy!

BOOK SEVEN: ADVANCED BLUES & FAKE STRIDE

Book7-271x300

Book Seven builds on Book Two by adding your advanced chord knowledge and fun new right-hand chord riffs to the blues rhythms that you learned.

You’ll also learn about blues devices, such as tremolo, slides, and turnarounds.

This book expands on some of the blues piano techniques you learned earlier. You will learn lots of ways to spice up your playing, and how to improvise blues piano over the rhythms you have been practising since book 2. To top it off you will be taught 'fake stride' and a terrific version of The Entertainer!

BOOK EIGHT: TAMING THE CLASSICS

Book8-271x300

Since this section largely relies on sheet music, beginning with a recap of musical notation and a quick lesson on key signatures, new symbols, and musical language. It also gives you a handy list of practice tips.

Hall teaches you to sight read music “the Pianoforall way,” which means watching out for familiar chords and motifs, and that the notes that are sharp or flat due to the key signature are given in red for easy spotting. You’ll then get into playing classical piano pieces, including big names like Beethoven, Bach,Chopin, Mozart, Strauss, Brahms, Eric, Statie, Verdi, Scott, Joplin and more.

If you have a goal of playing more pieces from sheet music after the Pianoforall course, I recommend spending quite a bit of time on this section, practicing your skills in reading music, pedaling, and tone.

BOOK NINE: SPEED LEARNING

Book9-271x300

Hall was clever with the name of this book, which is all about scales, triads, and arpeggios, aka the “vegetables” of practicing the piano.

If my piano teacher had referred to this area as “speed learning,” I perhaps would have been more eager to sit down and do it.

While this is the ninth book in the course, it contains practice “workout” routines and memory tricks that should be used from the beginning. This book has tons of fun exercises and memory tricks which you can use at any stage of the pianoforall course. Exercises in EVERY key.

This section of the course will further your understanding of key signatures, triads, seventh chords, and melodic patterns, which are all very useful for the lessons in the other books.

Pros and Cons

Now let focus on some of the pros and cons of the “Piano for all” teaching course.

Pros
  • Pianoforall provides you with visual and auditory ways to learn the content, which is especially helpful for beginners who aren’t yet comfortable reading music.
  • Jumps right in to playing. You’ll feel like you’re making progress from the first session.
  • Pianoforall teaches playing by ear, improvising, and composing melodies thoroughly, giving you a solid base of musicality and ensuring that you’ll always have something to play.
  • Makes you use your left hand more than traditional piano curriculums. Since Pianoforall encourages you to practice more with the left hand than the right, students of this program will be less likely have a “lazy” left hand.
  • Information is laid out clearly and easy to understand. While a bit plain compared to printed curriculum like Faber’s Piano Adventures, these e-books are well-organized and visually clean.
Cons
  • Little focus on technique. Traditional piano teachers remind their students of their hand position, posture, and their wrist, finger, and body movements. While lack of this teaching is an obvious drawback of online piano courses in general, Pianoforall in particular does not address it.
  • Avoids reading music. Even in the books that rely more heavily on sheet music, the names of the notes are usually provided, and sometimes you’re given the option to improvise. Therefore, even though one of the goals of the course is to teach you how to read music, it would be easy to come out with a less-than-stellar grasp of this skill.
  • Leaves out many piano notation symbols and terms. While the amount of terms and symbols this curriculum covers is adequate for those who want to improvise, play by ear, or play basic sheet music, students wanting to go beyond may find themselves perplexed by unknown markings. Hall recommends supplementing his course with material that teaches the terms and symbols of music notation.

Hey Robin, Just wanted to say thanks for this course. This is a great way to get up and running fast for songwriting on the piano. I feel like I owe you more money.

Your course seems to be what I’ve been looking for for quite a while. I have seen a gazillion of them out there but nothing compares to the way you present piano lessons.I’m playing everything now and it’s so exciting!!! I’m still only on Book 1 and I’ve learned so much already, I can’t imagine what you have in store for us in the other books.

My mother was a classically trained pianist and my father was a barroom “by ear” player and I always wanted to be a sort of a combination of them.  Your set of books has made it all fun for me again.  Could never be bothered by all the technical stuff, just wanted to sit and play.

Piano For All is great. Your course is everything that you and others said it would be. The lessons are do-able and satisfying. Your videos and sound bites make everything quite clear. I didn’t think I could make the piano sound this good so quickly.

I would highly recommend your course to anyone who wants to learn the piano. Thanks so much. You are making a dream come true.

In other words, this course is very liberating, simple to grasp, laid out in an easy-to-follow format, and gets you playing in NO TIME! Why piano is not explained in the manner that PFA teaches is completely beyond me! Piano for all truly builds my skills from the bottom up, giving me the building blocks necessary not only to play other people’s music but also to play my own. It’s a unique approach that often feels like putting the cart before the horse – but it works.

So, all in all, I think Piano for All is a great program for everything that it has in offer and as such, I have little qualms to give it a 5/5 star rating.
